The School of Balance’s Top Tips to Beat Cravings

When trying to lose weight or eat healthily cravings can be so tough. You have the best of intentions at the beginning of the week and plan to eat well but then the strains and stresses of everyday life take their toll and by Wednesday you’re reaching for the family sized bar of your favourite chocolate. Sometimes it can seem like your wills and goals are out of alignment with each other.

Here are 5 Top Tips to Beat Cravings from the School of Balance:

1. Wait!
Research shows that most cravings pass within 5 minutes so press the pause button and see if the craving passes on its own.

2. Distract yourself
Call a friend, have a bath, dance crazily to your favourite song anything to stop you obsessing

3. Be mindful
Get really honest with yourself. Are you actually bored? stressed? anxious? Deal with the real root cause.

4. Break the habit
Cravings can be habitual e.g. always having chocolate after dinner. Therefore, change your routine – directly after dinner go for a walk, brush your teeth or spend quality time with your loved ones.

5. Use a Craving Buster
Have a cup of unsweetened cocoa or allow a couple of squares of 85% dark chocolate melt on your tongue or try supplementing with BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids) all of which have been shown to reduce cravings.
